As soon as it had aired, complaints flooded into the USA Network over what people had just witnessed on Raw Is War. The December 7, 1998 edition of the flagship program included a devious Undertaker seemingly crucifying the helpless Steve Austin for all to see. The pair were scheduled to compete in a Buried Alive Match just 6 days later at Rock Bottom: In Your House.

Some fans were not happy, feeling the staged crucifixion was incredibly offensive. Trying to limit the damage, WWF officials assured everyone that Austin was not crucified, he was merely tied to The Undertaker's 'symbol'. Nobody was fooled, it was an extreme set piece to use in order to build towards a pay-per-view showdown.

At Rock Bottom, Austin showed no ill-effects of the humiliation. In fact, he even managed to win the Buried Alive clash and secure himself a slot in the upcoming Royal Rumble.

Again, the Attitude Era delivered another shocking moment. As eye-opening as it undoubtedly was, having 'Taker effectively crucify Austin right before facing him at Rock Bottom was ridiculous and overblown.
