Joe's character has changed very little over the course of is career, yet he remains impossible to pigeon-hole. He incorporates elements of his Samoan background, but refuses to allow them to dominate his gimmick in the manner of Umaga or the Usos. He can dial up the (admittedly stereotypical) sense of savagery, as proven when under his heelish "Nation of Violence" character in TNA, but is just as convincing without any mention of his ethnicity. He has also been dubbed 'The Samoan Suplex Machine' and 'The Samoan Submission Machine', a testament to his varied moveset. Boasting flawless technical ability, a hard-hitting series of strikes, and those jaw-dropping aerial moves, he stands out as a true once-in-a-lifetime talent.
