7 Reasons The 2016 Dusty Rhodes Classic Won't Be As Good As 2015

Too much of a good thing is still too much.

Before I start complaining about World Wrestling Entertainment, can we all just take a moment to appreciate the fact that WWE has had two major tag team tournaments in two years, with nothing more than pride and a trophy on the line? That, in itself, is pretty great.

In 2015 NXT held the first ever Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, a single-elimination tournament named in honour of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, long regarded as NXT's father figure. The 16-team tournament was inspired by the Jim Crockett Memorial Cup, which Dusty himself instigated way back in 1986.

The Crockett Cup was held three times, with the Road Warriors defeating Ronnie Garvin and Magnum T.A. in the final. Fast forward to 2015 and we had the team of Samoa Joe & Finn Balor vanquishing Baron Corbin & current SmackDown tag champion Rhyno to take home the first Dusty Classic.

The tournament has returned to NXT, but what chance does it have of following last year? NXT is a different place in 2016 to what it was in 2015, as the last 12 months have seen a true influx of top rated independent talent. These established names fill the tournament this year.

The 2016 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic could be a tournament for the ages, and I could be wrong.

Here's why I don't think it'll be as good as last year.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
