7 Reasons WWE Fastlane 2017 Absolutely Sucked
3. The Assassination Of Kevin Owens By The Coward Bill Goldberg
There was very little chance that Kevin Owens was leaving Fastlane with the Universal championship.
Most fans, even those caught up in the excitement of Goldberg nostalgia, expressed reservations about WCW's former phenom being able to perform anything resembling a wrestling match. His two previous bouts were a quick squash over Lesnar and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance in the Royal Rumble, not to mention that segment on Raw where he fell while kneeing his opponent. None of that is building a lot of faith that the 49-year old is capable of anything close to a Mania-worthy match.
Tonight was he and WWE's chance to put our apprehensions at ease, and yet they did the exact opposite and massively compounded them. If you have to have him defeat Owens, fine but at least give us a glimpse that Bill is going to be able to do more than a few spears and a jackhammer or eat an F5 when he's on the big stage.
In addition to that, after working hard and busting *ss for WWE in the role of Universal champion for months, Owens was dismissed and made to look like a jobber in the manner that he was squashed. This was on the level of Diesel's shocking title win over Bob Backlund back in the early 90s, except that Owens is in his prime and a guy WWE will need to rely on to sell their product long after Goldberg has gone back to polishing up his muscle cars.
