NXT is supposedly a developmental brand, even though many of its stars are grizzled indie veterans who don't really have anything left to learn. However, there's only so much time an already fully developed star can spend wrestling in front of the Full Sail crowd until the fans start campaigning for them to move up to the main roster.

While obviously some NXT graduates have managed to find success on the main roster, others have been lackluster to say the least.

Some wrestlers' tenure - Samoa Joe and Finn Bálor come to mind - in NXT seemed to just drag on and on, so their move up the ranks was simply a matter of time. Now Samoa Joe's highest accolade is the US Championship and Finn hasn't really been relevant since losing the Universal Championship after one day due to unfortunate injury.

There's too many to count - The Revival, American Alpha, even The Ascension - who all showed tremendous promise down in NXT, but were a letdown on the main roster.

Right now, Johnny Gargano has seemingly exhausted all his options in NXT and his move to the main roster feels inevitable. Sadly, his chances up there don't look too promising.
