7 Ups And 3 Downs For Last Night's NXT (May 6)
7. What He Deserves
Well, would you look at that. They gave one of NXT's official Real Big Lads a significant match that wasn't against someone that's just like them and it was all kinds of entertaining. The pairing of Dijakovic and Gargano is a fairly brave piece of booking as, going in, defeat for either man felt like a big deal. Gargano's rebrand would have looked dumb, but Dijakovic was at risk of entering perennial loser territory.
After a smartly even content, it was Gargano that emerged with the win thanks to an assist from Candice and an exposed turnbuckle. This is still bad for DD - he hasn't won on TV since beating Killian Dain in February - but does further the narrative we saw last week of 'The Garganos blaming NXT for their own in-ring shortcomings', hence needing to cheat their way back up the card. It's not the most original thing you've ever seen, but it's working.
I still really don't like the Gargano rebrand, and not for one second buy him as a credible, threatening heel, but week on week it feels like that's entirely the point. He's a little worm now, and a run of undeserved victories, each informing another round of self-righteous promos, is going to build nicely to someone finally shutting him up.
