7 Ups And 4 Downs From Last Night's NXT (April 15)

4. Cruiserweight Off Your Mind

Akira Tozawa
NXT

It's tricky to write about the Cruiserweight situation, given we know that there are men in that tournament who will be leaving the company following its conclusion. Not even in the usual 'all the best with your future endeavors" way either, they'll be leaving the company at a time when no other promotion is able to take them. It puts a horrible black could over the entire thing.

That's another article though, and in the here and now we got the genuinely entertaining pairing of Akira Tozawa and Isaiah 'Swerve' Scott as our opening match. As we've discussed many times, all wrestling tournaments are good, and it's so frustrating WWE doesn't like them. The fact we're getting a mini-G1 style structure here makes it even better.

Tozawa picking up the win will have surprised a lot of people, but given that one loss isn't catastrophic for anyone with this format it's a really smart way to open. Swerve can recover, Tozawa immediately looks like something with the pedigree a former champion should have, and it blows their side of the draw wide open. This will likely not elevate itself too much past a series of 10-minute mini-rippers.
