It's sobering to think that WWE's latest King Of The Ring is now no longer part of the roster. Wade Barrett was repackaged in dreadful style during 2015, redubbed as 'King' Barrett and wearing the familiar crown, cape and carrying his sceptre. Meanwhile, fans found it difficult to care about what was happening.

WWE should have learned their lesson with Sheamus in 2010, but they didn't. Barrett felt like a retread of a gimmick that hadn't worked for his Irish peer. Cartoon-like and feeling out of place, it just didn't have much traction when guys like Kevin Owens were adding realism to the product.

At Battleground 2015, Barrett faced R-Truth on the Kickoff show. The issue between both men was tedious at best, they were warring over who deserved to be called 'King'. More so than anything else on the card, Truth vs. Barrett came across like it belonged in 1995, not in 2015.

For the record, the heel won, but his reign as wrestling royalty was doomed to failure by some terrible writing. What were those in charge thinking?
