Money In The Bank Carmella James Ellsworth

Producing heat in wrestling is vital to the lifeblood of the business. But there is good heat, like the kind that gets people angry at a heel and makes them pay to see the bad guy/woman get beat up. Then there is bad heat, like where people get annoyed with the promotion and don’t want to watch anymore (there's been about 500,000 of them over the past couple years). Having James Ellsworth essentially win Money in the Bank is the latter type of heat.

During the pre-show, WWE aired a video hyping how they were making history. It was meant to be inspirational and tout the fact that women are now on the same level as the men in terms of their importance to the promotion. A long-awaited message. And then, Ellsworth.

However, it’s hard to be mad at the dude. Our anger from a kayfabe point should be directed at Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon. They had fake kayfabe outrage over what happened but didn’t A) bother to show up to the event, and B) didn’t bother putting any form of rule into place outlawing such nonsense. As pointed out, plenty of people have interfered in MITB before, so what did they expect?

This entry would be ranked higher here if some good things didn’t come out of it. Becky Lynch cut a great promo on SmackDown that actually highlighted how winning and losing matters. Carmella also brought up those past shenanigans from MITB history, which is nice when the company does callbacks like that. Still, in the end, this wasn't the way to kick off the first women's MITB match. If it happened a few years from now then it would be more acceptable but this just felt more disheartening than anything.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
