It was a tough year for some pro wrestling's biggest stars.

Finding success in an entertainment genre as multi-faceted as professional wrestling is no easy task.

Moreover, once one finally does make their mark in the world of sports entertainment, staying on top presents a whole new set of challenges.

Understanding the political landscape backstage, staying on the right side of the law, and resisting the urge to make controversial comments are three things that will go a long way in helping a wrestler remain in good standing with their employer.

However, as we have witnessed first hand in 2019, steering clear of the previously mentioned pitfalls is often easier said than done at least for some.

Now that the calendar is almost complete, it's the perfect time to take a look at five high-profile figures whose careers have taken a hit heading into 2020.

Of course, as we are about to see, not all setbacks are created equal. Some of the stars who made the list have an excellent chance to rebound, while others may find it nearly impossible to get their careers back on track.

With that in mind, here are seven wrestlers who saw their stock plummet in 2019.

7. Jim Cornette

For years, Jim Cornette has been a polarizing figure. However, in 2019, he may have finally gone too far.

This past November, while doing broadcast work for the NWA, the former manager made a comment that caused quite a stir. While calling a match, Cornette made the following remark:

"Trevor Murdoch, he’s mad, bad, and dangerous.... he’s the only man I’ve ever known that could strap a bucket of fried chicken on his back and ride a motor scooter across Ethiopia."

He would end up resigning from the promotion soon after the comment aired.

Yes, he's a heel. Yes, there is such a thing as free speech. All that being said, even in a pro wrestling context, insensitive commentary of that nature won't fly in 2019. Simply put, someone as intelligent as Cornette should know better.

Sure, Hulk Hogan said far worse and is back in a big-time promotion's good graces. However, Jim Cornette doesn't possess the same kind of star power.

The backlash he received following the incident all but ensures he won't be working for a major organization again any time soon — if at all.
