4. Bret Hart

It wasn't a completely international heel turn, but in 1997 Bret Hart turned on the fans of the United States of America due to a perceived lack of respect shown. The storyline reason for the turn was fairly accurate, but the truth was that after a singles babyface run that had lasted five years, fans had seriously soured on the Excellence of Execution.

Bret was a modern wrestler with a traditional mind, a fairly vanilla babyface covered in a layer of bitterness and disdain. The times were changing and the WWE audience were more excited to see a particular anti-hero rising through the ranks, and more willing to cheer nihilistic anarchy as opposed to excellence.

The crowd turned on Bret, and a heel turn was the only way to go. The turn was masterfully pulled off in one of the greatest WrestleMania matches of all time: the famous submission match against Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
