8 Booking Steps To Save The WWE Cruiserweight Title
4. Start A Contendership Ladder
After crowning a new champion by way of a tournament, the new Cruiserweight GM should announce that 205 Live (presuming that name sticks around) will be governed by a rankings system. WWE have toyed with this before; the 'Power 25' was a bit clunky, and yet it clearly depicted who was in line for a push/title shot.
That same format should be applied to 205, then tweaked to complement the smaller roster. A tightly-controlled, competitive contendership ladder is something fans of the show could become invested in over time. It'd make wins and losses truly matter, rather than booking the same combos against one another week-to-week without any purpose for victory or consequence for defeat.
If they were feeling particularly experimental, WWE could even implement a points system. For example, seeing Tony Nese defeat someone above him wouldn't necessarily knock that wrestler from their slot. Instead, it'd allow Nese to climb the table and leave the man he defeated open for demotion depending on the results of other matches.
