5. Roman Reigns Has Main-Evented As Many PPVs As Hulk Hogan
The main event slot is one of great yardsticks in wrestling. Now, for this, I don’t mean simply whatever match happens to close a show because if the Rumble goes on last then, christ, everyone’s main evented. I mean when the last match of the night is a 1 on 1, between two wrestlers.
These 1 on 1 main events are ultimately where all storylines must lead and, as such, wrestlers see them as the biggest deal. Thus we should too. There have been 220 of these matches in the 33 years the company have put these events on, and in that time, only 77 different wresters have had the honour of being in one.
Cena and Undertaker are tied for most appearances in them at 39 each but, as of his Backlash match with Samoa Joe - which admittedly most people didn’t see - Reigns is now tied with Hulk Hogan on 11.
Now, obviously this comes with the caveat of saying that back in Hogan’s day the company wasn’t having anywhere near as many of these events as they are now. However, since his first one in 2015 (vs Daniel Bryan at Fastlane, in case you’re wondering) Reigns has flown up the rankings.
He’s surpassed Punk (10), Edge (9), Angle (8) and Jericho (6) already, and has had more than twice as many as AJ Styles (5) despite the Phenomenal One holding the WWE Championship for 400+ days compared with Reigns 118.
