For years, NXT luxuriated in its own awesomeness by planting legends and current superstars at ringside for TakeOver vanity shots. The idea was that they were so fond of the product that they too had to join the ticket-purchasing punters to check it out for themselves.

Said shows were so f*cking fantastic that disbelief could easily be suspended that this were actually true. Especially when it came to revealing the latest wrestler Triple H had just read about on Cagematch.

Not now.

NXT slumped to such a degree in 2020 that Kevin Owens went from having some sort of religious experience at TakeOver: WarGames 2019 to giving Triple H the old "nah you're alright thanks" when asked about doing more than just a one-off KO Show the following year. Edge, on television, said he was interested in the Finn Bálor/Pete Dunne match. It's on the company to prove that and practice what he's preached.

Chasing off Pat McAfee won't just leave quite the tantalising tease for Wednesday's show, but protect the integrity of the NXT Championship he feigned interest in a fortnight earlier.
