8 Match Star Ratings For WWE Clash Of Champions 2020
1. Roman Reigns Vs. Jey Uso - Universal Title Match
Very melodramatic and expository for your writer's tastes - Roman Reigns, Paul Heyman and the Usos did have a great story to tell here, they were just exceptionally keen on not showing you what it was with much elegance - this can only be described as a triumph, nonetheless.
Particularly since Roman Reigns was in such bravura form in this new heel role. He literally smashed through that veneer of melodrama by raining down forearms in a frightening downpour at the finish. Reigns, grasping something so few do in wrestling, felt legitimately dangerous and demonstrably capable of f*cking somebody up. And he relished that sh*t.
There was a lot of talking. A lot of loud and clear talking, which betrayed the intimacy somewhat.
But beyond the slightly insulting decision, this was great: the pacing was restrained to allow for a huge, violent peak; a super inventive low blow/kick-out spot preserved Jey's dignity; the "Tribal Chief" challenge at the finish also functioned to achieve this while doubling as a dark echo of the sort of childhood game gone awry this all was.
Roman Reigns emerged from Clash of Champions as a star that felt as big if not bigger than any act WWE has promoted in the last five years.
The absolute pitch-perfect vehicle to get Roman over as a badass monster, one question wasn't screamed directly into your eardrum, at least: if Roman was willing to do this to his own family, what is he willing to do to any challenger that dares step to him?
