6. Bobby Lashley Vs. R-Truth

It's tempting to barely analyse what was barely a match, to write something to the effect of "It kept Lashley strong and was short enough to be satisfying maybe" but one of the few objectively great things to emerge from the Empty Arena Era has brought into focus that the squash match is long overdue a Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me-style reappraisal.

The squash match has always ruled; people just needed reminding that it ruled as a worthwhile genre unto itself, and Aleister Black's mischievous face implosions, Karrion Kross' head-dropping danger festivals, and Lance Archer's blackly hilarious killing sprees have made the form fashionable - and laudable - once more.

As such, Bobby Lashley Vs. R-Truth was unacceptable.

The opening comedic salvo wasn't not amusing - WWE has done the call-and-response bit to no audience already, but it's R-Truth, he can get it away with a lot - as was his deadpan, doomed attempt to surrender. When the match started, it was just a match, lacking totally in character. There was no real intensity, no gruesome stiffness, no toying with the victim, none of the wonderfully morbid qualities that make up the best squash matches.

It was there, Lashley did his sh*t.

Star Rating: ★★¼
