8 Most Embarrassing Moments In MMA History

4. Ray Mercer KO's Tim Sylvia

When former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia was announced to be facing former boxing heavyweight champion, Ray Mercer, most observers came to the same conclusion: If the fight was in boxing, Sylvia stood no chance, but if it was contested under MMA rules, Mercer was going to be submitted early.

So here's the thing: After Sylvia was denied a licence to box Mercer based on his lack of experience in the ring, the pair agreed to instead compete in MMA. Despite this seeming like an easy win for Sylvia, it has been reported that he and Mercer made a gentleman's agreement that the fight would be contested using only their fists, despite the MMA ruleset.

The problem was, Sylvia wasted no time in showing that he would not respect the agreement and immediately opened the fight with a leg kick. Mercer's face after realising that Sylvia would not be following their agreement said it all. He was p*ssed off.

Despite being 48 at the time of the fight, Mercer still possessed the tremendous punching power that had led him to the top of the heavyweight division and launched a thunderous right hand that knocked Sylvia out instantly.

In just nine seconds, Sylvia had been KO'd in a fight where most assumed he would easily win by utilising his experience in the cage.
