8 Reasons Why WWE Women’s Tag Division Has Failed

5. Lack Of PPV/PLE Defenses

Out of the gate, it looked like the Women’s Tag Team Championship was going to be treated seriously. From the crowning of the inaugural champs, the titles were defended on three straight PPVs.

But it was all downhill from there.

In the 39 WWE PPVs and PLEs since then, the women’s tag titles have only been defended on 11 main shows (not counting a couple of kickoff matches). That’s an abysmal batting average of less than 30%. When you back out the three subsequent WrestleMania title defenses (36-38), you’re looking at 8 of 36 shows, or 22% of non-Mania PPVs/PLEs.

While title defenses on the monthly big shows are not the only measurement of how seriously titles are treated, it’s still an indication of how valued they are and how much attention and faith is being put into the tag division. If you’re relegating the bulk of your title defenses to Raw and SmackDown, that can work if the division is getting good storylines and excellent matches.

But if not… then the lack of PPV/PLE title defenses is an indicator that WWE doesn’t view these titles – or its holders and challengers – as being worthy of that spot.
