8 Reasons Why WWE Women’s Tag Division Has Failed
3. Lack Of Focus/Storylines
Easily one of the biggest criticisms that has existed across
multiple women’s tag title reigns is the lack of consistent storylines or focus.
The most recent situation involving Sasha Banks and Naomi is particularly
reflective of the issue.
Naomi was being tapped to challenge – and most likely lose – to Bianca Belair in a singles bout for the Raw Women’s Championship, while it was reported that Banks was similarly going to be fed to SmackDown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey. That would mean that your tag champs – both former singles champions – would have been losers on a PLE, and the tag titles would have served as little more than props in the meantime.
As mentioned with the IIconics, it’s not uncommon for the women’s tag champs to disappear from WWE programming for weeks at a time or be considered little more than afterthoughts. The same goes for challengers. Remember Doudrop & Eva Marie? They were a new tag team that had a falling out two weeks into their existence.
At one point, you had Shotzi & Nox beat tag champs Natalya & Tamina multiple times in championship contender’s matches, but they never got a title match. Nattie & Tamina also went nearly four months without defending their titles on TV, almost the entirety of their reign.
The same goes for Carmella & Queen Zelina, who went three months earlier this year without a defense, while the two wrestled numerous times in singles matches, losing all of those bouts.
There’s just no direction to this “division,” which leaves
fans little reason to get invested.
