8 Times John Cena Actually Did Suck

4. The Chris Jericho Series - 2008

In the fall of 2008, Chris Jericho was enjoying the hottest streak of his entire career. His feud with Shawn Michaels was an instant classic, ranking among the all-time greatest programs in the five-decade existence of World Wrestling Entertainment. He was the World Heavyweight champion and a star capable of carrying a broomstick to an outstanding match. When it was announced that John Cena was returning from injury to challenge Jericho for the title at that year's Survivor Series, many expected great things. After all, Cena was a strong worker with unparalleled work ethic and if anyone could return from serious injury to excel in a major championship contest, against a star who was burning brighter than any other, it was the franchise player of WWE. Factor in their history of excellent contests and there was reason to be optimistic about the bout. Unfortunately, fans were disappointed by the final product. Cena and Jericho wrestled a very good match but, considering the lofty expectations fans had for them due to the quality of their previous work, it was a major step down. Jericho, for as great as he was at that point, simply could not muster a great match from a less-than 100-percent Cena. Is it Cena's fault that he failed to deliver in that huge spot? Not necessarily. He was still recovering from injury and was finding his feet following a few months on the sidelines. It happens. But that does not mean he disappointed any less. At Armageddon 2008, they had a rematch that, again, did not live up to the expectations that came along with Jericho's banner year. While there was nothing inherently wrong with the matches themselves, the overall product was lackluster and only helped fan the flames surrounding Cena and his perceived lack of talent. Deservedly so or not.
