8 Times WWE Tag Team Partners Fought Each Other
2. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Chavo Guerrero
The so-called 'Smackdown Six' era of Raw's sister show was, to my mind, the best in that shows history. At the direction of Paul Heyman, who was then one of the lead writers for Smackdown, Edge, Rey Mystero, Eddie Guerrero, Chavo Guerrero, Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle engaged in a six person/three team feud in the autumn and winter months of 2002.
Rey and Edge were the exciting, fiery babyfaces, while Angle and Benoit played the role of ultra-talented, always intense master technicians. It was Los Guerreros, however, who were the glue holding the thing together. Positioned as the sort of inbetween team in the whole equation, the uncle/nephew combination was as smooth as silk between the ropes.
They enjoyed a couple of WWE Tag Team Title reigns in 02/03, before cracks started to appear in their once rock solid armour. The lying, cheating and stealing good times ended when they lost the tag straps to the Basham brothers. Kurt Angle tried to place peacemaker but it was no use: Chavo turned on Eddie for good, bringing his father and Eddie's brother Chavo Sr. into the mix for good measure.
This lead to a grudge match at the 2004 Royal Rumble which, despite some good work, has to be considered a huge disappointment. The hype had been good and the talent was there, but they weren't given enough time to tell their story. Luckily, they got a chance at a do-over a few weeks later, with Chavo challenging Eddie for Latino Heat's just-won WWE Title on the February 19 episode of Smackdown.
This time they were given enough time and produced a damn fine television main event.
