In the discussion of the greatest fighters in the history of the lighter weight classes of mixed martial arts, one of the competitors rarely mentioned is Miguel Torres.

But why?

Before the UFC had weight classes below 155lbs, the organisation's then-parent company ZUFFA owned another MMA promotion, World Extreme Cagefighting, that showcased the best the sport of MMA had to offer in the lighter divisions.

And while some WEC bantamweight alumni such as Dominick Cruz, Urijah Faber, and Demetrious Johnson would go on to become some of the sport's most recognisable names after the UFC incorporated the division, long-reigning WEC Bantamweight Champion Torres did not get to enjoy the same fate.

Torres came into the UFC with an incredible 38-3 record, but a reversal of fortunes inside the cage coupled with a thoughtless joke on Twitter led to his release from the company. After defeating Nick Pace at UFC 139 Torres made the following insensitive tweet that caused Dana White to release him.

"If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn't mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises."

Torres would later replace the tweet, removing the offending term, but the damage was done.
