8 UFC Records That Will Be Broken (And 8 That Won't)
6. WON'T - Fastest Finish
Record: Jorge Masvidal - 0:05, 1st Round
Next Best: Duane Ludwig - 0:06, 1st Round
Poor Duane Ludwig: he must have thought he had this one wrapped up for life when the agile American knocked out Jonathan Goulet at Fight Night 3 in just six seconds.
Unfortunately for Ludwig, and very unfortunate for Ben Askren's face, Jorge Masvidal crashed the party with one of the most replayed knockouts in UFC history.
At UFC 239, in the midst of a very heated feud with one another, Masvidal sprinted across the ring and hit Funky with a flying knee right to the melon within seconds. The fight clock graphic hadn't even appeared on the screen yet, such was the unexpected pace.
Askren was out like a light immediately, with Masvidal landing a couple of f**k you punches before the referee could intervene. The pace of the ref is exactly why this record is unlikely to ever be broken, or tied at the very best.
It's easy to see that Askren was knocked out in less than five seconds, but a bout isn't stopped until the referee signals so, and a human ref can only react so quickly.
It would take an immediate knockout blow, and a referee who happens to be standing right next to both fighters with a good enough view to call an outcome, all within four or five seconds of a professional fight, for anyone to get close to this one.
