Critics who enjoy watching wrestling (rather than the grifters who say outlandish things for the clicks and clout) derive no joy from calling out subpar wrestling. The issue is compounded when the wrestler in question is a longtime favorite.

However, Bayley has been in a rut for a while now, and the trend continued Monday night against Raquel Rodriguez in a number one contender’s match for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship. The story of the match was supposed to be Bayley using her veteran wiles against the more powerful Rodriguez and the numbers advantage of the Judgment Day.

The problem on Monday night was that things did not flow well throughout the match. There were periods where they looked out of sync, though there were a couple of nice spots, like Bayley blocking Raquel’s rebound clothesline and turning it into a back suplex. But overall, the match had no heat (with a dead silent Madison Square Garden for much of the bout) and didn’t gel as well as it should have.

It's unclear at this stage what the solution is, but continuing on as if everything is fine is seemingly not going to work. Bayley isn’t wrestling herself out of this funk. It’s almost as if taking a sabbatical, resetting, and coming back to kick multiple forms of a** would be the best course. Even the best sometimes need that break.
