8 Ups And 4 Downs From WWE Raw (Feb 24)

1. McIntyre Interview Tells Effective Story

When done correctly, the sit-down interview has long been an effective tool in getting over a wrestler’s character and story. We saw it with Mick Foley 20-plus years ago, and we saw it Monday night with Drew McIntyre.

The 2020 men’s Royal Rumble winner talked about everything, referencing his debut as the “Chosen One” who was called a future world champion by Vince McMahon, to parading around with 3MB before getting fired six years ago. McIntyre noted that he was bitter and angry, with a chip on his shoulder, but he realized he was ultimately responsible for his situation and wanted to work his way back to WWE so fans didn’t just know him as that “idiot who played air guitar.”

This wasn’t a smiling Drew mugging for the camera, but it wasn’t a smug guy either. It was a somewhat humble, driven person who had everything lined up for him, but it never materialized. As he put it, he doesn’t want to be considered the “future” for so long and then suddenly be the “past” without ever being the “present.”

Nicely done, WWE.

He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
