Jinder Mahal’s sudden ascension came completely out of the blue, and there’s now talk that he’ll hold the WWE Championship through the coming months. This wasn’t always the plan, however, as earlier reports suggested WWE were building towards a summer title program between Baron Corbin and Randy Orton, which could still come to fruition.

‘The Lone Wolf’ is a clear favourite to win the Money In The Bank briefcase, and the pay-per-view takes place in Orton’s hometown. Given WWE’s fondness for having guys lose in their native city, there’s every chance we could see ‘The Viper’ take his belt back from Mahal, only to fall to an immediate cash-in from Corbin, who was pinpointed as a future main eventer a long time ago.

It’s hard to see such a feud spiking SmackDown’s interest levels. Corbin, for all the improvements he’s made this past 12 months, still has plenty of critics, while Orton’s latest run has been completely uninspiring. Regardless, WWE are clearly big fans of both guys, and while Baron still lacks polish, his development curve suggests he’ll become a championship calibre competitor sooner or later, so don’t be surprised if Corbin vs. Orton is one of SummerSlam’s main events.
