Yes, Cody helped beloved industry veteran, proven draw and multiple-time world champion Chris Jericho get over in AEW. The same Chris Jericho who had finally established himself as a true top guy in this exciting new promotion.
The guy trusted to carry the belt over such names as Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega or Cody himself. The Chris Jericho who was on something near blistering career-best form, spitting out fire promos week after week.
If that sounds ridiculous, just remember that ultimately a champion is only ever as good and credible as the challengers built up to face him(Just look at Roman Reign’s run in WWE). Jericho’s first PPV title defence against Cody had a big fight feel to it, not least because of a selfless stipulation added by Dusty’s boy.
If Cody lost the match, he would never again challenge for the company’s World title. This added an extra layer of drama to the match, wrong-footing fans over the eventual winner. Surely AEW wouldn’t book Cody to lose and rule him out of title contention forever?
It also lent extra dramatic heft to the match itself and added weight to Jericho’s heel persona. At the death, Jericho trapped Cody in The Liontamer and with every yank on Cody’s legs it felt like he was tearing away at Cody’s championship dreams.
