8 Wrestling Exceptions That Prove The 'Top Guy' Rule

2. Eddie Guerrero

No other man could have taken a gimmick like Latino Heat and made it work so well. This singular performer received criticism in WCW from the seven foot tall Kevin Nash who famously called Guerrero a €œVanilla midget€. This is the kind of climate that Eddie operated in and this is the kind of climate that he made every cocky beefcake look very foolish.

Billed at a pedestrian five feet, eight inches, Uncle Eddie had a defined upper body and very thin legs. He was Mexican, from a famous wrestling family who aren€™t the McMahons and he had inherited the famous Guerrero temper. He battled addiction for years and entered WWE as a 33 year old employee of the enemy promotion.

Swimming against that tide anybody else would have floundered. His absolutely genius cheating and cocky attitude resonated with fans and he eventually made it to the title picture. Normally It is not well received by us internet marks when a fan favourite must cheat to win but he got it over.

They would never make Roman wriggle out of his boot to steal a win and while caveats like this protect the top guy rule, this man could make a packed arena cheer for it.

Eddie is a writer, cinephile, TV fan and wrestling abuse victim from Newcastle. After receiving his film degree in London he returned home to lift boxes in the vein of an 80s montage... It's not as fun as it looks in the films.
