American media mogul Ted Turner came very, very close to putting Vince McMahon out of business in the '90s. Ted Turner really got under Vince's skin during the Monday Night Wars. Vince thought it was unfair that Turner would buy Vince's talent, like Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage and others. Because Vince CREATED stars, you see, he didn't just buy them. Except that he did. When Vince was expanding in the 1980s, he signed the top talent from the countries territories to lucrative contracts and helped kill off many smaller promotions. For Vince to castigate Ted for buying talent reeks of hypocrisy. Vince was so shaken up by Ted's tactics that he aired a series of 'Billionaire Ted's Wrasslin' Warroom' skits which lampooned Turner and several current WCW and former WWF stars. WCW Nitro beat Monday Night Raw in the ratings for 84 consecutive weeks. Although Vince eventually won the War, in reality he couldn't hope to compete with Turner who is a genuine billionaire and has a genuine media empire. Vince wasn't in Ted's league. Wrestling was just a side business for Turner, something to air on his TV station. Although Vince has claimed that the WWF killed WCW many, many times since, it could be said that WCW was the architect of its own downfall and that Vince didn't 'beat' them at all. Ted definitely beat Vince, the evidence was all over WWF television in the 90s.
