8 WWE WrestleMania Main Events With Terrible Builds
7. John Cena Vs. Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania 23)
John Cena and Shawn Michaels were only in the main event of WrestleMania 23 by matter of circumstance. Oh sure, they were two huge stars who absolutely deserved that slot, but it was never the original intent to have them go on last, and they weren't pushed as the main event. The key selling point of that show was Vince McMahon and The Donald's hair vs. hair match. Meanwhile, the match planned to close the show was Batista's title defense against The Undertaker (who won the Royal Rumble).
However, concerns about the health of Batista and 'Taker gave WWE cold feet about having the two headline, and so the decision was made to have Cena and Michaels go on last.
Thing is: going into their WWE Championship match, HBK and Big Match John didn't really have much of a quarrel with each other. Sure, the two were World Tag Team champions, and the insinuation was made that Michaels would turn on his partner. Ultimately, though, there was little done to establish any bad blood between the two superstars aside from Shawn kicking Cena on an episode of RAW.
The two still wrestled a good main event, but it's clear little effort was made toward the hype.
