8 WWE WrestleMania Main Events With Terrible Builds

2. The Undertaker Vs. Sycho Sid (WrestleMania 13)

Oy vey. Talking about the circumstances surrounding WrestleMania 13 in detail can get really tiresome. Here are the bullet points:

  • Planned main event is Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels for the WWE Championship.
  • Shawn "loses his smile" and fakes a knee injury, missing out on WrestleMania.
  • The title is moved to Sid, and his planned match with The Undertaker is now the main event.

Meanwhile, Bret's program was shifted to Stone Cold Steve Austin, and most of the build on television for the PPV is focused on that. Sid and 'Taker, both being babyfaces, didn't really have that much of a beef with each other, and for some reason, WWE didn't feel like giving them a reason to dislike each other. You could say it was an issue of lack of time, but for goodness' sake, two weeks before WrestleMania, they had on Paul Heyman to debate ECW with Jerry Lawler. Seems to me like they had too much time on their hands. But apparently in WWE's mind, "they're big sweaty men, it draws itself" was their rationale.

Joke was on them, however; WrestleMania 13 is the lowest-bought event in the show's history.
