By TakeOver’s fourth stop in Brooklyn, Johnny Gargano was at his most conflicted. After accidentally causing Aleister Black to lose the NXT Championship to Tommaso Ciampa, it was clear that Gargano's obsessive rage was altering his moral character in ways previously not seen. Initially a three-way match for the championship was announced due to the triangle that had developed. However, Black never made it to the event as he was laid out by a mystery attacker. The Brooklyn main event was then changed to a one-on-one Last Man Standing match.

When the bout came, Gargano entered in an outfit that looked to be pure evil, with his typical attire enveloped by a symbiote. The alien creature - featured heavily in the Spider-Man series - possesses the ability to take control of its host and bring out their most vile traits. Like Eddie Brock before him, Gargano's good nature was quelled in favor of his most vengeful emotions. This darkness overcame Johnny when he hit a handcuffed Ciampa with a running knee but overdid it, falling off the stage in the process. With both men down, Ciampa miraculously beat the referee's ten count to again overcome his former partner.
