The Rock’s last significant WrestleMania match took place at WrestleMania 29 against John Cena where he did the honours and lost the WWE Championship to him. It was a match planned well in advance, with it being in the works for 2 years since Rock made his triumphant return to the company in February 2011. Rock and Vince McMahon mapped out a plan where Rock and Cena would headline WrestleMania 28 and 29, with Rock going over in the first match and Cena going over in the second.

The main event at WrestleMania 29 was huge, with it being the central attraction that drew over 80,000 fans and helping it become the highest grossing live event in WWE history, grossing $72 million. But the match nearly ended in disaster, when Rock tore his adductor and the top of his quad completely off his pelvis midway through.

Rock has spoken how “At the 15 minute mark, ‘bang!’ I feel something pop and I’m like ‘What the f—?’ I’m laying there and both of us are out. I said ‘Oh f—, something is going on.’ 85,000 people and I sort of roll over and stick my hand down in my trunks because I wanted to make sure no bone was sticking out.”

The Great One has noted how the match was supposed to be 45 minutes in length, with him and Cena having to improvise after his injury and reduce the match time by 20 minutes. Rock could have easily stopped the match there and then but went another 10 minutes for the fans, much to director Michael Bay’s annoyance when Rock had to skip out of the premiere of his film Pain & Gain for emergency surgery to repair his hernia tears.
