6. Seeing The Light

I must confess that I was not sold on the Grado character until I saw him live. After witnessing his comedy match with DCT on an ICW show in Cardiff this year, I was left in no doubt that he is an extraordinary talent: the match was a work of art. At times, it whisked me back to my childhood. Grado has taken elements of 1970s British wrestling humour and made them his own.

“I call him Medium Daddy . . . Grado himself will tell you that he’s not the best wrestler in the world — but his energy is infectious, and he’s one of those guys that you just kind of love. I think he’s almost a documentary superstar as opposed to a wrestling superstar because it really comes through in the documentary how loveable he is.

“Grado rose to fame in the Vice documentary, and then we were both in that BBC documentary [Insane Fight Club]. The documentary genre for him has really helped, because you see him as a person, and you can’t help but love him as a person.”
