9 Reasons Roman Reigns Defeating The Undertaker Was The Right Call At WrestleMania 33
3. The Undertaker's Been Running On Fumes For A While Now
Ironically, Paul Heyman referred to the WrestleMania story of Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg as "the death of a superhero", but in reality, that metaphor belonged to the main event.
Many fans are upset that The Undertaker didn't go out on a better match, but in a way, this might've been necessary for both the fans and for Mark Calaway himself.
Let's face it, The Undertaker has barely gotten by these past few years. He looked considerably slower against Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 31 and needed a whole lot of help against Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 32. It was getting to the point that believing The Undertaker was the superior competitor in his matches was getting harder and harder to accept. Time was running out for 'the Deadman'.
It was clear The Undertaker's gas tank was running on fumes and at WrestleMania 33, the tank ran dry.
The Undertaker's last match featured a number of botches, not all of which were his fault, but what had once been a cloudy matter of opinion become crystal clear fact. The Undertaker was done.
Just as the fans witnessed the demise of The Undertaker, I think Mark Calaway needed to experience it also. As he stood in the ring after the match had ended, it was quite obvious he knew it was over. He had nothing left to give and he could give no more.
