The third and final act of The Undertaker/Roman Reigns saga was undoubtedly the most emotional.

The Undertaker laying down his gloves, jacket, and hat in the middle of the ring, in essence laying to rest his career, was a sight many fans thought they'd never see. Even the fans that knew this day was coming still found it very hard to accept. The agony of defeat was essential to telling this story.

Mark Calaway has been entertaining WWE fans for over 25 years as The Undertaker. Many fans associate his career, in some form or fashion, with their own journey in life, especially their childhoods. Without getting too psychoanalytical here, seeing The Undertaker symbolically retire in the center of the ring after all these years tugs on the heartstrings of even the most stoic sports-entertainment fan.

The Undertaker's emotional post-match service would not have been received the same way had it followed another victory. The loss to Roman Reigns was absolutely necessary as it acted as the nail in The Undertaker's own coffin, and demonstrated The Phenom's acceptance and acknowledgement that it was time.
