9 Things You Didn't Know About WWE Backlash
1. 2007 Was Ricky Steamboat's Last Ever Televised Wrestling Match
The career of the legendary Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat came to a sudden end in 1994 when he suffered a severe back injury during a Clash of the Champions match with Steve Austin. It was innocuous enough, as Steamboat simply took a back bump off the second rope, routine stuff, but damaged a disc and was forced to call it a career soon after.
Fast-forward 15 years and Steamboat was feeling a little better. In a situation not too dissimilar to Shawn Michaels in 2002, Steamboat was coming out of retirement for a big match, teaming up with Roddy Piper and Jimmy Snuka to face Chris Jericho at WrestleMania XXV - and the night after he was going to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
It was a big test for Steamboat, but he rolled back the years and entered a performance that belied his age. There was very little ring rust, and Ricky was in great shape for a 56-year-old. So impressive was he that night, WWE booked Steamboat to go one-on-one with Y2J at the next month's Backlash in an Intercontinental Championship match.
This would be the Dragon's last televised wrestling match to date. Steamboat lost to Jericho after a good, competitive match. In the months afterward, Steamer worked with Sheamus, Drew McIntyre and Jericho on house shows, but he never worked another match on WWE TV.
