While not technically impromptu matches, WWE has regularly added someone surprise entrants to matches or had qualifiers that solidified opponents later during the same WrestleMania. They all deserve a special mention here.

The most famous example of a surprise add-on has to be Seth Rollins cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase to make the WrestleMania 31 main event between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns a triple threat. At WrestleMania 33, the Hardy Boyz made a shock return to WWE and were added to the triple threat ladder match for the Raw Tag Team Championship, making it a four-way battle that they won.

Surprise opponents have ranged from the incredible – Cody Rhodes returning to WWE at WrestleMania 38 to face Seth Rollins – to the ridiculous – Braun Strowman recruiting Nicholas as a partner to challenge The Bar for the Raw Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 34.

And then there are the “fight your way into a title match” examples. Daniel Bryan beat Triple H to open WrestleMania 30 to earn a spot in the main event triple threat against Randy Orton and Batista. Kane won a battle royal to earn an ECW Championship match against Chavo Guerrero at WrestleMania 24. And Tamina and Natalya won a tag team turmoil match on night one of WrestleMania 37 to challenge Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler for the Women’s Tag Team Championship the following night.

All of these matches were on the card, but the participants changed on the night of the match.
