5. The Man Comes Around.. To Heeldom
Face it, babyface Becky Lynch was going to get boring really fast.
Lynch and Lyra Valkyria dropped the Women’s Tag Team Championship the night after winning them, which in turn ended The Man’s smiling babyface return run at one day. Becky was Lyra’s substitute for WrestleMania 41, replacing an injured Bayley and getting a massive pop.
The pairing made perfect sense considering the mentor/mentee roles the two have played in the past, but moments after dropping the tag titles, Lynch turned on her countrywoman and pummeled her before dropping her with three Manhandle Slams, turning heel and leaving to a chorus of boos.
There are a few conditional gripes to get out of the way here: Valkyria looked like a fool sitting there with her mouth wide open in shock after the first clothesline and just took her next two assaults without even getting a hand up to defend herself. She’s the Women’s Intercontinental Champion, not some random jabroni. Lyra looked weak here, but thankfully, that should pass.
Given the circumstances, there was no reason to take Bayley out of 'Mania other than for the Becky return pop. Bayley and Lyra could have won the tag titles and dropped them the next night, and then Lynch attacks both of them. However, if it’s revealed that Becky blindsided Bayley to take her out and the Role Model seeks revenge upon her return, that makes chicken salad out of chicken sh**.
Regardless, a heel Becky – provided she doesn’t revert to the Big Time Becks character – could be really good, particularly if she joins a new heel stable that appears to be taking shape.
