There wasn’t a question of whether they would be a surprise return of a mega-superstar Sunday night, it was a question of who would return.

Leading into Money in the Bank, rumors were flying that John Cena, Becky Lynch, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar all could return in advance of a WrestleMania-sized SummerSlam. There also were rumblings that current superstars Sonya Deville and Randy Orton could appear after being out of the ring for a bit.

In the end, it turned out that only Cena would show up on PPV, returning at the very end after Roman Reigns defeated Edge to retain the Universal Championship. That pretty clearly sets up a clash between the two at SummerSlam, which could be a tremendous conflict. Their last encounter was punctuated by some great promos and a mixed reaction on both ends, whereas this time should have pretty clearly defined face/heel lines.

And really, it’s the perfect kind of challenge for Reigns, who has beaten all comers for nearly a year now.
