Roman Reigns broke into the WWE main roster at Survivor Series 2012 as part of The Shield, and unlike most newcomers, the trio didn't have to wait for their turn to enjoy the spotlight. Despite their quick rise to the top, getting on the wrong side of the veterans was still not a wise thing to do, but Reigns took his chances when he got a little mouthy with Randy Orton backstage.
Bryan Alvarez of the F4W Newsletter reported the first instance in 2013 at a house show when Orton and Reigns got into an argument backstage after they botched a spot during a tag team match. The incident landed Roman Reigns and The Shield in hot waters with the higher-ups and created a power struggle between Triple H and Vince McMahon. McMahon wanted to punish the trio for their behavior, but Triple H protested and insisted on booking them with the same momentum.
Randy Orton also faced allegations of trying to slow down Roman Reigns' singles push. However, that didn't stop Orton from putting Reigns over in their match at that year's SummerSlam.
