9 WWE Royal Rumble Tropes That Have Been Perfected

9. Comedy Entry - Drew Carey (2001)

WWE comedy is as low-brow as it gets, but the company still attempts to lighten the mood in every Royal Rumble. This usually comes in the form of quick and embarrassing eliminations, often involving the announce team or Santino Marella. The point is clear, but the execution is routinely lacking.

Not so in 2001. The second Royal Rumble of the new millennium was full of plunder and gimmickry from start to finish, and Drew Carey’s initial cameo was a genuine breath of fresh air in a worryingly violent match. The stand-up comic entered the match at number five, and soon found himself alone in the ring when Matt and Jeff Hardy stupidly eliminated each other. Who entered at number six? Kane.

Everything about this was great. Drew Carey’s reactions were absolutely on point, and he even went as far as offering money to the Big Red Monster, who was obviously having none of that.

Kane stalled long enough for Raven to come out for the save, but this was an excellent display of comedic timing from all involved. When The Fashion Police and The Ascension suck up a couple of minutes of air time on Sunday, think of Drew Carey.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
