A man who started out as a perennial dark horse in AEW is now an undeniable star entirely in his, and the company's, own making. When news of the TNT Championship broke last night his was the first name on the lips of most fans. He's an outstanding candidate, but Darby Allin is not someone who needs a championship to maximize his time on TV.

He's the man you beat on the way there or, one day, maybe in the final itself. His popularity is such that any heel in any tournament is going to be both a made and marked man in it after managing to eject him from one of the brackets. Best of all, his entire appeal is based around what a likable and natural underdog he is, and wrestlers like those are seldom ever hurt by a defeat.

Darby Allin's story is one of upsetting the odds when they look the most stacked against him and, while yes, he'd have to go through 7 other men to win this tournament, this is neither the right time nor the right prize to pay all of that off.
