24. King Of The Ring 1997 (The Undertaker Vs. Farooq)

Yes, Ron Simmons main-evented a WWE pay-per-view: this is no mirage.

Supposedly, the planned main event for KOTR 1997 was a grudge match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, but Vince called off that match after the backstage relationship between the two became so toxic. Thus, we have this convoluted main event where Farooq, as the leader of the crumbling Nation of Domination, is seeking to become the first black WWF champion, while the Undertaker is blackmailed by Paul Bearer into letting him be his manager.

Obviously, the two storylines have zero to do with each other, and is a tonal mismatch. On one side, you have Paul Bearer keeping a dark secret above the Undertaker’s head implying an evil past, and on the other, you have Farooq playing the race card and having a bit of a squabble with Crush and Savio Vega.

Naturally, the match is cold as a result, and ‘Taker and Farooq don’t have the chemistry to make up for that in the ring. It’s not terrible, but it’s not worth revisiting.
