Babyface vs. Babyface main events are a rarity in WWE.

They’re difficult to pull off, as you run the risk of splitting the crowd, or turning them cold. Thankfully, by 2008, people were sick of John Cena, so they were more than happy to boo him and cheer Triple H as he defended his WWE Championship.

This match is... alright.

It’s certainly the best match from its show, but it suffers from the fact that Triple H is one of the worst babyfaces in history, as nothing about his wrestling style suggests he’s the good guy when he’s supposed to be. It’s not helped by the fact he’s wrestling John Cena, who also can’t help but work heel-ishly from time to time (in this match, he uses the steps and ring post to work Hunter’s legs), so the result is a rather weird “face versus face” match where the roles of de facto heel and face are not filled, since both babyfaces wrestle like heels.

Still, it’s a competent match with a surprisingly clean and decisive victory for Triple H (yes, even in 2008, Cena could lose clean). If you’re a fan of both guys, by all means check this match out out, but it’s not exactly a classic.
