4. King Of The Ring 1996 (Shawn Michaels Vs. The British Bulldog)
It’s a shame Shawn Michaels’ run as the babyface WWF champion didn’t happen in 2016, as he would have been wholeheartedly embraced by an audience that valued technical prowess and in-ring showmanship over “being a badass.”
Still, although coming at a low point business-wise for WWE, this match between HBK and Davey Boy Smith is a gem. With a fine mix of technical wrestling and power moves, this match is a showcase for how fantastic Shawn was wrestling as the babyface in peril. Of course, Davey Boy is no slouch either, and while there are a bit too many rest holds for my liking, he admirably pulls off being the powerful heel.
If you only know King of the Ring 1996 for the Austin 3:16 promo, seek out this match, you won’t be disappointed.
