As the shackles of his gimmick continued to loosen throughout the mid '90s, it wasn't until he went through his second rebirth that he fully shed the zombified approach of his original persona. And what a rebirth it was.

Returning from literally being buried alive, he swapped out the purple gloves for fingerless biker ones instead and he dropped the previous attire design altogether, replacing it with all-black outfit with Gothic accents, shoulder pads and hinges. The hats and coats went too as he began wearing long Gothic robes for his entrances that had similar designs to his ring attire, and he also sported a tear tattoo on his right cheek.

The Lord of Darkness was a completely new chapter in 'Taker's career as he could finally showcase what he was capable of in the ring, having fantastic matches with Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Mankind and Kane - all of which highlighted his athleticism and his new brawling style. Yes, the things he did in the ring throughout those three years were nothing short of awe-inspiring, and in terms of shaping his career, this persona may well have been the most pivotal of them all.

In addition, he also spoke a heck of a lot more than ever before, highlighting his competence on the mic beyond 'Rest In Peace', enjoyed what might just be his best WWE Championship reign and kicked off the character's joyful descent into edgier, darker territory.
