10. Vs. Bob Backlund - WrestleMania XI

Like many of my generation, I have grown to love crazy uncle Bob Backlund. Every time he turns up on WWE TV and starts wailing maniacally at nobody in particular my heart swells to three-times its average size. His nonsensical ramblings truly are a joy to behold.

In 1995, I couldn't for the life of me understand how Bret 'Hit Man' Hart, former WWF Champion and quite obviously the best wrestler in the company, would even need to break a sweat to defeat this vanilla old man. Still, break a sweat he did. Backlund had defeated Hart for the WWF Championship at the previous Survivor Series, when Bret's mother threw in the towel. Ten-year-old John Bills was heartbroken.

This was the rematch, and came with an 'I Quit' stipulation. 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper was the special guest referee, and very quickly becomes incredibly irritating constantly asking either man if they want to give up. Backlund eventually gives up (saying 'yeah' instead of 'I quit' no less), and the whole thing is mercifully over.

Bret said in his book that this is his least favourite match, and if there wasn't a 19-second squash and an 11-minute painful waste of time on the list, it would be ensconced at the bottom here.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
