Every WWE Backlash Main Event Ranked Worst To Best

Triple H may get a brief mention.

Back in the day, the purpose of Backlash was relatively straightforward - to settle the unclosed grudges established at WrestleMania. For this reason, it had big shoes to fill, especially when it came to main events. Sometimes it succeeded, and sometimes it didn't.

In more recent years, Backlash has been resurrected, firstly as a blue-brand pay per view, and more recently still, as a red-blue mash up. Its identity as a whole therefore remains in flux. With the fifteenth Backlash event on the horizon, there is a balance of exemplary moments and highly questionable ones in the show's history. Nobody really knows what it's for any more, but every WWE fan has at least one golden wrestling memory that occurred under its banner.

The main events of Backlash perfectly exemplify the duality of quality in WWE. On this list, one can find the over-glorified and misconceived, through to the perfectly booked and neatly executed. With titles on the line and competitors striving to either stay relevant or get that extra big push, high quality is expected as standard, and at certain point, delivered.

14. Triple H Vs. Hulk Hogan (2002)

Yes, fans did love Hulk's WWE homecoming in 2002, and yes he was a top card draw and Triple H was the champ. So this title match was kind of inevitable, but still...

To start with, the in-ring work was a little lackluster and oversold. With all respect to a veteran of Hulk's stature, the Cerebral Assassin had no window to go full pelt on his opponent, which is what the fans had come to expect in a Triple H match. Hogan took the victory regardless, which was over-entitlement if we ever saw it.

To render this even more of a nonsensical event, the match had two completely pointless interventions. The first was from Chris Jericho, whose plan seemed to be to sabotage the match for all concerned. The second was from The Undertaker, who ran in to Hogan's aid, but then started throwing punches at him when The Hulkster rejected his support. 'Taker can furthermore be seen smiling when Hulk does win the championship. Are you guys friends or not?

The Game sneering like an angry poodle after losing the title sums up the silliness of the whole show.
