Kurt Angle's WrestleMania Matches - From Worst To Best

2. Vs. Brock Lesnar - WrestleMania XIX

WrestleMania XIX thankfully saw the name revert back to roman numerals, and also came with a unique main event. Kurt Angle took on Brock Lesnar in the closing match, and it was the first time in WrestleMania history that the main event featured two men wrestling under the real names. Trivia is fun!

There were a lot of question marks hanging over this going into it. Angle's neck was as good as gone, and three weeks before the event he found out he needed to have his neck fused. In a normal world, this means you shouldn't be competing a professional wrestling match. He got the go-ahead, but the assumption was that he wouldn't be able to take many bumps throughout. Lesnar also had busted ribs and other injuries going in.

The match features one of the most famous botches in WrestleMania history, as Lesnar went for a Shooting Star Press only to land square on his head. This understandably led to The Beast being a little less than all there for the short remainder of the match, and Angle really comes through as a super worker by holding everything together and making sure they get to the finish.

Most people only remember the botch, but what happened in the 20 minutes or so before it was truly wonderful. Both men have extensive grappling careers and had taken to professional wrestling better than any two amateurs in history and this, combined with the occasion, gave a true feeling of something special happening before our eyes.

They would go on to better this match, but as far as WrestleMania main events go this deserves a whole heap of praise.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man.
